A website without monthly fees: how it works and what to watch out for

Euro banknotes and coins, the cost of a website without a monthly subscription

What a website without monthly fees means

Answer

You pay for building the website once and the site is yours. After that you only pay for the domain and hosting, usually once a year. There is no subscription without which the site would stop working.

Many businesses pay for their website every month, often without realising it. A builder subscription, “website management” in an agency package or a template licence add up over a few years to the price of a new website.

A website without monthly fees works differently. You pay for the design and build and the site becomes yours. It runs on standard hosting and does not depend on a platform you have to rent.

Website builder with a subscription versus your own website

Answer

A builder is quick to start, but you pay for it as long as the site exists and moving away is hard. Your own website is paid once, it is fast and you can move it to any hosting provider.

Builders such as Wix, Squarespace or Webnode have their place. For a hobby or a quick test of an idea they are fine. For a business website that should work for years, keep a few things in mind:

  • Endless subscription: stop paying and the site disappears or gets limited.
  • Hard to move: a builder site usually cannot simply be moved elsewhere; switching means rebuilding.
  • Limitations: some features, custom e-mail or removing ads are only in higher plans.
  • Speed: builders load a lot of code your site does not need.

Your own website is built exactly for your business. It contains only what it needs, so it tends to be faster and does better in search engines.

What you still pay for

Answer

The domain and hosting. The domain is your web address, hosting is space on a server. For a simple business website together they are a small yearly amount, not a monthly subscription.

No website is completely free after launch, and anyone who claims otherwise is leaving something out. Every website needs two things:

  • Domain: an address like yourcompany.com, registered for a year and renewed.
  • Hosting: the server the site runs on, often including business e-mail.

The difference is that you can move these services to another provider at any time and the site goes with you. For my websites I arrange hosting and the domain; the first year is free and after that you pay once a year. If you prefer hosting on your own account, I set the site up there.

How to make sure the website is really yours

Answer

The domain should be registered to you, you should receive logins to hosting and the admin panel, and the website files can be downloaded and moved at any time.

Before signing, get confirmation of these points:

  1. The domain is registered to your company or to you.
  2. You receive logins to the hosting and the admin panel.
  3. The source files will be handed over on request and another developer can take them over.
  4. The site does not rely on a paid theme or plugin that must be renewed every year.
  5. It is clear what changes after launch will cost.

Editing content without a developer

Answer

A custom admin panel lets you change texts, photos, prices or announcements without a subscription and without calling a developer. Changes appear on the site immediately.

A common argument for builders is that you can edit the site yourself. A custom website with an admin panel can do the same. The difference is that the admin is designed for your content: you do not have to learn a complex editor, you only see what you actually change.

Medical practices change opening hours and announcements this way, companies update references and price lists, manufacturers manage orders. More on what can be built is in the article custom web application development.

How to move from a website builder to your own site

Answer

Back up texts and photos from the old site, check where the domain is registered, build the new site alongside the old one and switch the domain only after checking.

  1. Back up content: texts, photos, prices and testimonials from the current site.
  2. Check the domain: find out where it is registered and whether you can transfer or point it.
  3. Build the new site on a test address while the old one keeps running.
  4. Set up redirects from old page addresses to new ones so you keep your search positions.
  5. Switch the domain and only then cancel the builder subscription.

The whole move usually happens without a day of downtime, and customers only notice the site is faster and clearer.

When an ongoing payment makes sense

Answer

When you use a service that keeps running and evolving, such as a booking system with text reminders, or when you want regular updates and development of the website.

Not every ongoing payment is bad. It makes sense when you get something you actually use:

  • a booking or appointment system that sends texts and e-mails,
  • regular development, new pages and content,
  • an AI assistant or automation that handles enquiries for you.

What matters is that you do not pay rent just for the website to exist. What a website costs and what drives the price is covered in the article how much does a small business website cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is a website without monthly fees completely free?

No. You pay for the domain and hosting, usually once a year. But you do not pay a monthly subscription for the site itself or the platform it runs on.

Can I move the website to another provider later?

Yes. Your own website is a set of standard files that can be moved to any hosting.

Will I be able to edit the website myself?

Yes, if it has an admin panel. There you change texts, photos, prices or announcements without a developer.

Who owns the domain?

The domain should be registered to you or your company. If I arrange it, I transfer it to you on request.

What if I need a change after launch?

Small edits you make in the admin panel. Bigger changes, such as a new page or feature, are quoted in advance.
